Australia Post PreSort Letters Service

The PreSort Letters Service is available for customers who post 300 or more barcoded letters of the same size category and weight.

The service offers reduced prices (see above) to those customers who can sort letters into a particular order, place them into appropriately labelled trays, complete documentation prior to posting at a designated postal outlet and comply with relevant mailing conditions.

All barcoded PreSort Letters are to be lodged in trays and sorted according to the Barcode Sort Plan. A Barcode Direct Tray is a tray containing barcoded letters where all addresses belong to a single sort plan number (postcode range) as defined in the Barcdode Sort Plan. Barcode Direct Trays for delivery within the same state as lodgement attract a lower price than Barcode Direct Trays delivered to other states.

Residue trays contain letters not included in a Barcode Direct tray. For example if you have 800 letters from a variety of locations then you may not have enough in any single sort plan to lodge a Barcode Direct tray. Instead they should be lodged in Barcode Residue trays and attract the residue tray price.

For complete details of this service please refer to the PreSort Service Guide booklet or ring 13 11 18.

Requirements for the Barcoded PreSort Letters Service

1. Customers must be using current Address Matching Approval System (AMAS) certified software (e.g. BLINK) and that the Delivery Point Identifiers (DPIDs) contained within address records used to produce the mailing are valid against the latest version of the Postal Address File (PAF).

2. Small and medium sized letters must use correct addressing format as detailed on page 6 of the PreSort Letters Guide.

3. Customers have the option to lodge barcoded and unbarcoded PreSort Letters together, as part of the same mailing. A combined lodgement must contain a minimum of 300 barcoded letters. The percentage of barcoded letters within the total lodgement must meet or exceed 75% of the lodgement from October 1999 and 80% from July 2000, increasing each year up to 2002 (see page 11 of the PreSort Service Guide). The unbarcoded component will be charged at the barcoded residue price.

4. All letters that are not metered must bear a Postage Paid imprint. A postage meter may be used as a payment method for the PreSort Letters Service.

5. A return address is required to be shown on each letter.

6. Letters must be sorted according to the Barcode Sort Plan and presented in Direct Trays with the letters in the tray facing the same direction. Each tray must have an appropriate barcode sort plan or residue tray label with a lodgement/job number on the front and the name and address of the mailer on the reverse side of the label. Trays and labels are available from Australia Post Business Centres or Mail Centres.

7. Before using the service customers need to complete and submit an Application for Lodgement of PreSort Letters form available at all postal outlets.

8. PreSort mail can only be lodged at the approved Mail Centre or Business Centre (ring 13 11 18 for details of your closest Centre).

9. Discounts are also available for approved advertising material. To apply for the AdPost Service a completed AdPOST Service Application form must be submitted.

10. Each PreSort lodgement must be supported with documentation:

  1. Metered Mail must be accompanied by a completed PreSort Letters - Meter Lodgement Document

  2. Non Metered Mail must be accompanied by completed PreSort Letters Lodgement Document and a Manifest (For details see pages 19 and 44 of the PreSort Service Guide. Note BLINK's Manifest Report can be used as a basis for this Manifest).

Note: This information is provided as a summary of the PreSort Letters Service. For complete details of this service please refer to the PreSort Service Guide booklet or ring 13 11 18.

It should be noted that small letters that are barcoded and postage paid by an approved postage meter attract a charge of 43 cents per letter and there is no minimum lodgement requirement. (i.e. you do not need to have a minimum of 300 letters to attract this discount).
